Hello World! - Week 1 of Development

Welcome to the first devlog for Size Matters! A third-person puzzle game we are working on this summer where you traverse a surreal world by swapping places and sizes with objects around you. Shrink to crawl through tight spaces, grow to gain new perspectives, and solve puzzles where creativity and scale go hand in hand.

With this first devlog, we've uploaded our creative brief as well as our team charter, so feel free to read if you want to learn more about us or the project! Further, below is a spread of our work for this week of May 14-21:

Gameplay

  • On May 17, we made our first build of the game in a game jam!
  • Developed the signature swapping mechanic.
  • Developed a pressure plate mechanic for the demo level.
  • Discussed limitations and bugs we might encounter and strategies for future builds.
  • Came up with lots of cool ideas to expand on other mechanics, such as mirrors and space manipulation.

Art

  • Some art themes we did during the game jam were a mix of detailed and cutesy.
  • Afterwards, during a meeting, we discussed moving more towards a Victorian era or Alice in Wonderland theme.
  • In terms of assets, we had created a realistic portal-esque cube, a T-posing female with a bow, and a chessboard with some pieces.

Design

  • Created the test level with a basic room that has a table, a pressure plate, and a fireplace.
  • The swappable objects to test with were a cube and a circle.
    • The cube was big and needed to be swapped with to trigger the pressure plate, as it only accepted large enough objects.
    • The ball was small and needed to be swapped with to be able to walk into the fireplace.
