Brand New Level - Week 4
Size Matters » Devlog
Hello, one more. It has been another week of work and additions. This week, our main task has been to create the first playable level, and we are decently proud of what we came out with. We also had our last presentation last week, and we've done a lot of talking and discussing on all aspects, so here is our progress and ideas for this week of June 4 - June 11:
Gameplay:
- We again have discussed on how to make puzzles more intuitive for players who aren't thinking of the game as we (the puzzle makers) are. We've decided we want to go in a direction of environmental and object interaction like we mentioned, and its visible in our most recent build.
- There has also been a lot of discussion on the different mechanics we want to incorporate, and the main one we have incorporated for this level so far is having object be placed in a correct alignment to meet a painting that will unlock a door for example.
- We have also managed to get the outlines working, but we are still working towards fixing the camera, and are still in discussion about whether we want first or third person.
Art:
- Not as much has gone on in terms of art, our art people have mainly been working hard on doing the first (official) character model, but we have had discussions on effects and animations to make the game feel better.
- One such example is an animation, such as the player snapping their fingers to swap with an object, or maybe some particle effects to make the players feel the weight of the swap a little more.
- We have also started on some music, although none are yet implemented within the game, but keep an eye out!
Design:
- As this is the week our first playable level was due, a lot of work has been put into the design of the level to make environments feel intuitive, while also being curious enough for players to want to explore and complete puzzles. We still have a lot to do for art, textures, and materials but we are slowly building there.
- We've also added a pause menu to help players with pausing, and potentially in the future quitting or resetting the current level. This is, however, our main UI element set up, and I am sure we will be adding more to it in terms of normal gameplay as well.
- Finally, we have been creating issues for new design mechanics that could be used in different levels, lots of coding to do for designing the game's main mechanics now that the core has been mainly fleshed out and left to adding just effects for.
